This web site is the result of a year-long class-work about a local industrial heritage: shipbuilding. Our emblem is a lighthouse ("le Phare"), symbolizing a guide to the ships coming into port. Who are we? We are 13 students learning metalwork, on our first year in "baccalauréat professionnel" (an equivalent to a vocational training certificate) from a vocational school in Saint Nazaire, a seaside town in the west of France. Contents Our site is made of three parts: The first part shows the several stages of a work we have made at school all through the year: a metal sculpture, entitled "le Phare", representing both the image of a lighthouse and the evolution of the techniques used in shipbuilding (soldering, riveting...) The second part is aimed at showing an evolution of the town of Saint Nazaire through history, which is closely linked to the development of a local industrial know-how: shipbuilding. The third part deals with the use of sea signals such as lighthouses or beacons around Saint Nazaire and the Loire estuary. We have worked in partnership with "Phares et Balises", which is the French service of naval signals. We are sorry we could not translate the site entirely, still we hope you will enjoy visiting it. Don't hesitate to send remarks and suggestions, we would be pleased to answer back.
